Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is caused by a process called atherosclerosis, which is defined as a build-up of plaque inside arteries. The plaque build-up causes the arteries to narrow and reduces the blood flow to the legs. PAD affects approximately 8 to 10 million Americans.
Risk factors for peripheral arterial disease include:
Age of 50 or over
Tobacco users
Diabetics
Obesity or high fat diet
Lack of exercise or sedentary living
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
High triglycerides
History of heart disease such as coronary artery disease (CAD)
Family history of heart or vascular disease
