If you have varicose veins, you're not alone. As many as 60% of all American women and men suffer from some form of varicose veins. These veins can range from very small discolorations near the surface called spider veins, to very large, bulging cords that run the length of the leg.
Venous insufficiency, which results in the over-dilation of the venous vessels in the legs, is one of the causes of varicose veins. The dilation eventually prevents the valve cusps from closing properly resulting in reflux. The pooling of blood results in ineffective flow back to the heart.
Varicose veins are hereditary, and while they are not preventable, there are minimally invasive options available for treatment.
